I do agree that Binaural Beats are not the complete answer to meditative states, but I do believe that they can help you get there.

Sometimes I get lazy and just put on the headphones to get into a meditative state. This is NOT necessarily a good thing. It depends on whether or not I am focused on one thing at a time if the audio helps me. If I'm highly focused then the audio helps me, but if my mind is still racing, then the beats aren't doing anything.

In my experience though, they can help you reach states which you might not have been able to before. Some people have difficulty meditating for a number of reasons. Much of it having to do with expectations (which you clarify a great deal here). I think the audio helps get around these barriers, so that you can experience the state. Then later on when you understand it better you can use breathing and focus techniques to get you there on your own.

I hope this is clear. Anything that gets you there is a good tool in my opinion :)

Excellent article. I am still in the learning process and I was also confused about the true meaning of meditation. Practice, practice, practice, it is a good way to realize what meditation really is.

Love

Wow a very concise coverage of common misconceptions that abound about meditation, including among many people who claim to teach it. I especially appreciate #5 because it a particular one I often found on a soapbox about. Not only are the claims of "deeper than a Zen Monk" as one claims, ridiculous and based on a very shallow, incomplete and erroneous understanding of the relationship between brainwaves and states of consciousness, it creates obstacles to both authentic Meditation practice and the real potential and powerful uses of Brainwave Entrainment Technology.
