Spiritual Leaders For Obama
October 30, 2008 by Ray Baskerville
I am not of the opinion that the spiritual and the worldly or profane are separate. It is my belief that as we move into the 21st century we will see more and more cohesion and integration of the spiritual in worldly life. Other than those living in remote caves in the high Himalayas, I imagine that the vast majority of the world’s population is aware that next Tuesday America will elect a new president.
America is a melting pot, of races, religions and spiritual paths. When understood and embraced this diversity gives great strength and character to what is still a relatively young nation. Spiritual leaders from different faiths and persuasions have come together as a group to write a letter and endorse Barack Obama as a true leader for these tumultuous times. I fully support their view and their endorsement.
Deepak Chopra, Jack Kornfield, Lama Surya Das. Jean Houston, Jack Kornfield, Reggie Ray, Reb Zalman Shachter-Shalomi, Seane Corn, Cyndi Lee, Jack Canfield, Shiva Rea, Pema Chödrön, Marianne Williamson, Barbara De Angelis, Roshi Joan Halifax, Joan Borysenko, Krishna Das, Sharon Salzberg, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Stephan Rechtschaffen, Judith Ansara Gass, Robert Gass – and more every day!
"As spiritual leaders signing this letter we are stepping forward to say: "We can make a difference" As our spiritual practice empties, opens and strengthens us, we are naturally moved to engage in the world with compassion, equanimity, and the dedication to live our values.
We know many of you are already both concerned and
involved in this year’s Presidential election. Yet, in the past weeks, many of us have heard friends in the spiritual community expressing ambivalence about voting. When asked why they wouldn’t vote we heard things like: "It doesn’t make any difference"; "I’m more interested in spiritual practice than politics".
"Humanity is at a crossroads. We can no-longer afford to sit on the sidelines. We are asking you to get engaged.
The 2000 presidential election was decided by just 500 votes and this November appears to be just as close. Every vote matters. Your vote and the votes in your community could make the difference.
Please make a heart-felt inquiry and look at the candidates. Ask yourself who best reflects the values you want to live by – those of spirituality in action."
Who do you believe will lead this country and the world in the direction you would like to see it move?
Which candidate will foster security through international cooperation rather than wars of aggression?
Which candidate will move policy most quickly toward a sustainable habitable planet for future generations?
Which candidate will most support our commitment to human rights and equal opportunity for all people?
…and then Vote. Let your voice be heard.
Together there is nothing we cannot do.

Obama has a lot of supporters just now. The way the elections are going, the odds of him being the next president are exceptionally high.
I just hope he has the skill to turn this country around.
America is ready for a change, and I hoping that Obama can lead us in that direction. It’s refreshing to see all the spiritual leaders from different religions and viewpoints coming together to endorse him. It just makes me that more confident in him, as they are seeing what millions of others have seen in Obama.
I’m so happy that Obama was elected. I’m Canadian, I’m white… and yet this affected me so deeply, I cried when it was announced–people all around the globe cried tears of happiness. It seems like there IS hope, America did the right thing and surpassed all the hatred that surrounded this campaign, surpassed the racism. You could almost feel the shift at the time he was announced president elect.
These various people of different backgrounds coming together to endorse him is precisely what his campaign embodied; this is the start of the change he spoke of. America grew up a little the other day.
